SEC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

SEC Offensive Player Of The Week
Carrie Patterson, Georgia
F • 5-7 • Sr. • Atlanta, Ga.

Patterson's goal just 38 second into the game helped lead Georgia to a convincing 6-0 win over Kennesaw State and moved her into sole possession of the Bulldogs all-time scoring record. Patterson finished with her first career hat trick – the 11th all time in Georgia history – bringing her career tally to 36 goals, while the early tally was the quickest by a Georgia player since Patterson scored just 21 seconds in on Oct. 31, 2008 at Tennessee. Patterson also moved into a tie for the Georgia lead with eight career multi-goal games.

SEC Defensive Player Of The Week
Kailey Anders, Arkansas
D • 5-7 • So. • Allen, Texas

Transitioning from her position up top last season to the defensive backline, Anders helped key the Razorbacks' shutout victory over Michigan in the 2009 season opener. She helped limit Michigan to eight shots, five on goal that were all stopped by Arkansas' goalkeepers. Anders proved she is still dangerous offensively with the team's first goal of the season, a 30-yard rocket, scored on a counter attack at the 36:13 mark. Dating back to last season, Anders has scored a goal in three consecutive matches.

SEC Freshman Of The Week
Amy Howard, Auburn
GK • 5-8 • Mandeville, La.

Howard posted a shutout, making two saves in her first career match. She was playing without one of her top defenders in front of her for the final 65:54 as Auburn lost a player due to a red card late in the first half. Became the first Auburn goalkeeper to post a shutout in her collegiate debut since Megan Rivera made three saves in a 3-0 win over Georgia State in 2001

SEC COACHES' PRESEASON POLL

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Florida was selected as the favorite to claim the 2009 Southeastern Conference women's soccer title by the league's 12 head coaches. This marks the 12th year that Florida has been tabbed by the coaches to win the title.

Each of the opposing SEC coaches cast their vote for the Gators to win their fourth consecutive SEC Championship. Florida returns eight starters, including All-SEC performers Ashlee Elliott and Lauren Hyde, from last season's squad that posted an 11-0-0 mark in league play.

The Gators were selected tops in the East by garnering 66 total points (11 first-place votes), ahead of Georgia's 53 points. Georgia returns nine starters, including First Team All-SEC performer Carrie Patterson.

In the West, LSU was first with 63 total points (eight first-place votes) compared to Auburn's 58 points (four first-place votes). LSU returns eight starters from last year's squad that won a share of the SEC Western Division with a 7-3-1 record in league play. Auburn returns nine starters from 2008, including SEC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-SEC pick Katy Frierson.

SETTING THE STANDARD

The Southeastern Conference has continued its rise as one of the top conferences in women's soccer.

The 2008 women's soccer season reaffirmed the SEC's prominence in the country. Six teams from the SEC were invited to the NCAA Tournament. Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee all made the 64-team field. The six teams combined for a record of 3-6 with the Gators advancing to the third round. The SEC now has a 44-53-8 (.457) NCAA Tournament record in 56 appearances.

SEC women's soccer will begin its 17th season in the year of 2009 deeply rooted in the national scene of collegiate soccer. Since the SEC initiated women's soccer as a varsity sport in 1993, the sport's popularity has grown through the country and especially in the Southeast. A defining point in the SEC's women's soccer success came in 1995 when FOX Sports South broadcasted the SEC Tournament Championship match between Alabama and Kentucky on a tape-delayed basis, signifying the first appearance of an SEC women's soccer match on television.

Southeastern Conference women's soccer continued to grow over the next couple of years as the conference made a name for itself nationally. In 1998, the SEC had its breakout season with Florida winning the conference's first NCAA title in women's soccer in just the program's fourth year of existence. The league led the nation with six NCAA Tournament teams that year, an accomplishment which firmly inserted the SEC as one the major conferences in women's soccer. The SEC also made bigger strides in its television coverage with three regular season matches and the SEC Tournament championship match shown live on the SEC-TV package. In 2003, the SEC Soccer Tournament moved to a neutral site in Orange Beach, Alabama, signifying the growth of the sports' popularity. In 2006, SEC-TV's women's soccer coverage was increased to four regular-season matches, in addition to the SEC Tournament championship match.

In 2009, SEC teams will make more than 15 live television appearances during the regular season. That is three times the amount of appearances from previous seasons.

That incremental growth, combined with increasing exposure on the national and regional scene, has SEC women's soccer looking to blossom to new heights in the year 2009 and beyond.

Ole Miss opened its 2009 campaign on the road and took a 1-0 loss to UAB after the Blazers scored with just under eight minutes remaining on the game clock. Competing without the services of senior captain Hannah Weatherly, the Rebels controlled the run of play in the first half and used a steady offensive attack to rack up a 15-6 shot advantage for the match, but couldn't find the back of the net. Five Rebel freshmen and two sophomores made their Ole Miss debut. The Rebels are now 9-5-1 all-time in season openers. Sunday's result was just their second opening-game defeat since 2001. Steve Holeman's squad hosts the Ole Miss Nike Invitational this weekend, welcoming Morehead State (Friday, 7 p.m.), Jackson State (Sunday, 1:30 p.m.) and Mississippi State to Oxford.
